(No matter its colour or condition, we all deserve to feel as comfortable as possible in our skin. In this interview, special guest Dr Monisha Gupta, a Fellow from the Australasian College of Dermatologists, gives insight into caring for chronic skin conditions that may cause disability. She also gives information on what could be the underlying factors for different disabilities, what path to follow for the treatment and most importantly what are the different treatment and resources available in Australia for people with skin disabilities.
About the guest speaker
Dr Monisha Gupta is an International Medical Graduate who obtained specialist dermatology qualifications in India in 1993. She moved to Australia and, following two years of up-skilling, took the fellowship exams of the College of Dermatology in 2008. Monisha is an active member of the college, having served on committees and remains a thought leader in her field. She is the Head of Department at Liverpool Hospital which is the most sought after and the largest training site for dermatology trainees in NSW. She works across different suburbs in Sydney and enjoys the challenge of managing patients across different demographics. Melding her experience across the two countries, she set up the first dedicated Pigmentary Disorders Clinic in Australia at The Skin Hospital, Darlinghurst, in 2012 and extended the services to Westmead in 2019. Monisha practices general dermatology with a focus on medical dermatology. She has an interest and expertise in chronic diseases in dermatology like eczema, psoriasis, acne and tropical infections. She is passionate about identifying and addressing inequity in health care and promote diversity in workplaces.

(Ikram's story is a story of resilience, confidence, and desire to live her life in the best way she can every single day. Ikram received her Multiple sclerosis diagnosis in 2003, and ever since then, she has been working tirelessly to control the symptoms and relapses. Through her non-stop commitment to physical therapy, and decision to only surround herself with supportive people, Ikram choses to live well everyday.

(In this episode, we meet Zeliha Iscel, who moved to Australia as a child, but has since travelled to more than 25 countries around the world. As a government consultant and disability advocate, Zeliha shares information about accessible organisations that welcome culturally diverse people with disabilities as well as her personal life philosophy. As a woman with visual impairment, she believes looking at life with the eyes of the heart will lead each of us to the best opportunities and experiences.

Zeliha Iscel is a Turkish Australian migrant who has a visual impairment. She shares her journey, starting at the age of six, when she first arrived in Australia. Zeliha is now one of the leading disability advocates in WA and a successful business person who owns her own consultancy company. Her lived experience shows that blindness is not a barrier to living well.

En el episodio de hoy contaremos con la compañía de Maria Morales-Boyce una española viviendo en Adelaide que ha trabajando por 20 años como trabajadora social en una organización sin fines de Lucro llamada STTARS. Ella se encarga de apoyar a sobrevivientes de tortura y trauma de origen refugiado y ademas se desempeña como líder de equipo y coordinadora de desarrollo comunitario.
Una de las razones personales de María para ejercer este trabajo, fue una conexión con su abuelo quien, allá por 1936, al comienzo de la guerra civil española, fue enviado a prisión por ser miembro del sindicato de los ferrocarriles nacionales, una empresa que en aquellos tiempo formaba parte de la República. En ese entonces, no había mucho conocimiento sobre el impacto de la tortura y el trauma.
Antes de llegar a Australia. María trabajó en diferentes organizaciones en España, Reino Unido, Suiza, Bélgica e Italia.
Ademas de su extensa carrera en el area social y comunitarios, ella también es madre de dos niños y le encanta hacer mosaicos y música.
(In this episode, we will be talking about the importance of having the advice of experts in the area of mental health counselling to support emotional wellbeing.
We will also talk about the services that the STTARTS organisation offers to the community and the 3 ways in which Maria Morales advises us to have good mental health.
About the guest speaker
In today's episode, we will be joined by Maria Morales-Boyce, a Spanish woman living in Adelaide who has been working for 20 years as a social worker in a non-profit organisation called STTARS. She is in charge of with supporting refugees who are survivors of torture and trauma, and also serves as a team leader and community development coordinator.
One of María's personal reasons for doing this job was a connection with her grandfather who, back in 1936, at the beginning of the Spanish civil war, was sent to prison for being a member of the national railroad union, a company that in in those times was a part of the Republic. Back then, there was not much knowledge about the impact of torture and trauma.
Before arriving in Australia, María worked in different organisations in Spain, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Belgium and Italy. In addition to her extensive social and community career, she is also a mother of two children and loves to make mosaics and music.

(Summer used to be a student ambassador. During her time as a student ambassador, she met a group of like-minded friends.
When she faced the darkest period of her life, this group of friends helped to support and sustain her.
In addition, mental health counselling was an important tool to improve her low mood.
Summer’s advice to everyone is that when you are feeling depressed, don’t hesitate to take the initiative to ask for help.
