(A young man with Polio learnt that if you focus on the things you can do, instead of the things you cannot do, life is much more enjoyable. For instance, he chose swimming instead of other sports requiring him to run or jump. In this episode, Son shares how he keeps himself occupied: by competing in a triathlon (swimming) race, learning public speaking and leadership skills with an international club or driving to the beach with his left foot. Son is content with what he has and remains positive whenever life gets a bit tough.
About the storyteller
In this episode, Son shares that although Polio affected both of his legs since he was 5 years old, he discovered many other types of sports to keep his mind and body healthy, such as: swimming, joining an international club (Toast Masters) to learn public speaking and leadership skills and driving himself to places he love. He commented that whilst the majority of the public drives with their right foot, he too could drive - with his left foot. بدأ حسين الإسماعيل مسيرته الدراسية في المجال الهندسي، ولكنه اكتشف شغفه بالإبداع الفني فحول دراسته من الهندسة الى الفنون ومن اجل إتمام دراسته الفنية هاجر حسين بلده الأم السعودية إلى كندا ثم بعدها انتقل إلى أستراليا. انتهى حسين مؤخراً من الدراسة في جامعة فليندرز في جنوب أستراليا وعمل قبل تخرجه من الجامعة لمدة ستة أشهر مع مؤسسات ووكالات فنية معروفة "مرئي غير مرئي" Visible Invisible في أدلايد حيث تعرف على فنانين محليين من ذوي الإعاقة وتعاون مع البعض منهم للقيام بمعرض عنوانه

(In this podcast, Hussain discusses the beginning of his artistic career and how art helped him to have a goal in his personal life. For Hussain, preparing for his exhibition “Visible and Invisible” was one of the most important experiences in his life, as he focused on the challenges faced by people with disabilities while working across the arts space in Adelaide. With Fayrouz, Hussain discusses the characteristics of suitable places for everyone to practice art, and he shares some accessible art venues he has noted in Adelaide and in other places.
About the storyteller
Hussain Alismail started studies in engineering, but discovered he has a passion for artistic creation. He quit engineering and devoted himself to studying Arts. Hussain left his homeland Saudi Arabia to pursue his arts study journey. First, he went to Canada then he came to Australia.
Hussain recently completed his studies at Flinders University in South Australia and, before graduating from university, he worked for six months with well-known art agencies in Adelaide where he met local artists with various disabilities and collaborated with some of them on an exhibition entitled “Visible Invisible”.

Hikâye anlatıcımız, gençlere geleneksel el isleme tekniklerini öğretirken, adeta ülke çapında folklorik kostümler konusunda danışmanlık veren tek adres olmayı basarmış bir moda evi sahibi ve başarılı bir iş insanıdır. (Our storyteller, who started using a wheelchair at a very young age due to the remote conditions in her village, moved to Australia at the age of 5 with her family. Aside from living with a disability, adjusting to a new land, culture and language in Australia initially made pursuing her goals challenging.
Fatma proudly calls herself a "good Samaritan" Turkish Aussie and philanthropic tailor. Working hand in Hand with her community and society, she trained and now works as one of the leading tailors in town and is a successful business owner of a fashion house selling high-end dresses. She teaches skillful traditional handmade techniques to youngsters and even provides consultancy regarding Turkish folk costumes to many nationwide intuitions. Moreover, she is a keen philanthropist who helps immigrants and refugees by sewing for them.
About the storyteller
Our storyteller, who started using a wheelchair at a very young age due to the poor conditions in her remote village back in hometown, immigrated to Australia with her family at the age of 5. She refers to herself as a proud Turkish Aussie, a philanthropic tailor. Our storyteller, who has founded her own business, a high-end fashion house, is a successful business person, and as a philanthropist who helps migrants and refugees by sewing, she sets a very good example of what an immigrant with a disability can do in life and how to get over the barriers to live well and succeed.

(Our story is about living well with disabilities. The story is about facing the challenges in life wherein disability is not a hindrance to living well inside and outside the home.
In Zumba class, our storyteller was able to develop friendships and learnt more about other activities that are available within the community. Since the start of Zumba class, our storyteller's life has been transformed. This interview highlights the importance of having friends and people to talk to, in order for people with disabilities to lead happy and connected lives.
About the storyteller
Our storyteller will share her knowledge and information about the importance of accessing resources and support from the local Community Centres. Through the Community Centres, our story teller is now actively participating some of the activities in the community such as Zumba Class. Through the Community Centres, our storyteller's talents and skills are being supported. These various activities make our storyteller feel a sense of belonging. Our storyteller is now living well through the support and resources from the local Community Centres.

Ang ating storyteller ay matapang na namumuhay ng matiwasay sa kabila ng kapansanan. Noon, maraming mga bagay bagay na hinde nya magawa. Nahihirapan siya sa paggawa ng araw araw na gawain. The story highlights the significance of accessing local health services such as Physiotherapy that can in turn help to improve one's emotional wellbeing and develop the social skills to attain friendship.
About the storyteller
Our storyteller is living well with their disability. Prior to accessing the local resources and services, our storyteller was having difficulty to perform daily living activities. The motivation of our storyteller to manage daily activities was very low. However, after accessing local medical services, our storyteller gradually built up a routine. Completing household chores and learning computer skills has become a source of joy. In addition, our storyteller is now accessing bus and train services alone confidently.
Our storyteller believes that money cannot buy happiness. Happiness can only be achieved by having a support network like family and friends.

(In this interview, Nidhi Shekaran shares her personal story, discussing the challenges she faced in life and how she handled them. She talks about her passion, achievements, and how family and well wishers supported her along the way. Being an employee at Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association, she also shares information about some of the resources available in the community for people with disabilities and how one can avail them.
About the storyteller
Nidhi Shekaran has worked and volunteered for Multicultural Disability Advocacy Association since 2005, as well as serving up to seven other advocacy organisations. She has been a finalist for the NSW Volunteer of the year awards in 2017. For the last decade, she has also been involved in the public speaking organisation Toastmasters and still continues to share her story there. Nidhi has written blogs and has been featured in two newspaper articles.

Alejandra Osorio es de Chile y llegó a Hobart con su familia en 2018. Es entrenadora de baile y fundó Beat Latina, un grupo de baile que ayuda a las personas a sentirse involucradas en la comunidad. Es formadora de Yoga y está enfocada en dar oportunidades laborales a otros grupos.
(Alejandra talks about a dance group that helps her move forward with her personal goals. She gives adaptive dance classes to people from different cultures in the community and she develops different performances to showcase Latin American culture in Tasmania. This story has many aspects about how to live well in Australia. For example, dance helps fill her body with energy and also encourages her to make new friends and feel involved in the community.

Our storyteller, Turkan Aksoy shares her story about migrating to Australia at a very young age and being later diagnosed with dyslexia. Despite the challenges of being a migrant who was neurodiverse, she approaches life with determination, confidence and acceptance of himself to always live life to the fullest. She has continued to pursue his education, found work in social services and is now serving people from diverse backgrounds and building a career around helping others integrate into society.

Our storyteller is a Turkish migrant who moved to Australia at a very young age and was later diagnosed with dyslexia. Despite all obstacles, she worked hard, carried out her education and got involved in life without giving up.
