(A Paralympian on wheels, Nazim Erdem (Naz) was born in Turkey later migrated to Australia with his family. At the age of 20, he became a quadriplegic (a person affected by paralysis of all four limbs) after a diving accident.
A former amateur boxer and Aussie Rules player, Nazim took up wheelchair rugby while in rehab - and he's never looked back, earning a spot in the Australian wheelchair rugby team and competing at the past four Paralympic Games, including winning gold in London 2012. He has now competed at multiple Paralympic Games in the sport of Wheelchair Rugby. He has won two gold and two silver medals at five Paralympics from 2000 to 2016. His most recent success was winning the gold medal at the Rio Paralympic Games in 2016.
His service to sport has gained him an Order of Australia Medal in the year of 2014 Australia Day Honours List and awarded an Order of Australia too. He became the first person with a spinal cord injury to paraglide solo; he was also the first person with a spinal cord injury to compete in the Targa Tasmania car rally. He has a diploma in computer programming, and works as a peer support coordinator for the Australian Quadriplegic Association (AQA), a Victorian disability support organisation. As a sport addict, he is also a sports ambassador for the TAFISA World Sport for All Games.
About the storyteller
Five-time Paralympian Nazim Erdem (Naz) is the oldest and most experienced player on the Australian wheelchair rugby team. Born in Turkey, he later immigrated to Australia with his family. Growing up, Nazim enjoyed timing how long he could hold his breath, becoming so good that he was eventually able to hold it for up to three minutes. Then at 20, when he broke his neck diving off a pier and faced the prospect of drowning, equipped with a lifetime of practice, he was able to hold his breath for the two-and-a-half minutes it took before his mates pulled him from the water.
An amateur boxer and Aussie Rules player before his accident, Nazim found a new sporting outlet in wheelchair rugby after being introduced to it during rehab, making his Paralympic debut eight years later at the Sydney 2000 Games.
In 2002, adrenaline junkie Nazim became the first person with a spinal cord injury to paraglide solo. He was also the first person with a spinal cord injury to complete the Targa Tasmania car rally, a six-day car race across the state.
He admires Muhammad Ali for his determination to succeed despite the odds, and in 10 years’ time he hopes to still be involved in wheelchair rugby, encouraging aspiring athletes with similar injuries to pursue their dreams. His service to sport has netted him an Order of Australia Medal in the year of 2014 Australia Day Honours List and awarded an Order of Australia.
Nazim holds a Diploma in Computer Programming from North Metropolitan TAFE, and works as a manager at a disability service and support organisation in Victoria.
