The receptionist of Nonna's Cucina, Michela Capriccioni, will tell us about the joy that is created in such a close working group in which employees and volunteers who live with disabilities can find a sense of belonging and family, all dressed by a wonderful tomato sauce. Plus, this interview covers advice on how to actively engage in the inclusion program in your business and how to look for a similar business near home.

(Our guest Dr. Kiran Thapa, is the owner of “The Chowk,” which is the first Nepalese pub in Australia. It symbolises Nepal's diversity by offering live music, festive cuisine and ambience. Dr Kiran JI mentions that the pub can be an important social space. It can provide a sense of community connection and increase capabilities. Pubs can be a good space for people with a disability as it is a place where many different types of people come together. Pubs offer a relaxed and welcoming environment where people can socialise and make friends. There are many pubs, restaurants and eateries in Hobart that are accessible for people with disabilities, featuring lots of cultural cuisines to be enjoyed.

Catherine là một phụ nữ trẻ người Úc gốc Việt, sinh ra và lớn lên ở Perth, Tây Úc. Sau một sự cố khiến cô bị liệt khi còn nhỏ, Catherine bị tàn tật vĩnh viễn ở cánh tay trái và chân trái. Tình trạng khuyết tật khiến cô gặp khó khăn khi đi làm, hoạt động ngoài trời và một số công việc hàng ngày. Tuy nhiên, với sự giúp đỡ của gia đình và nhân viên hỗ trợ, cô đã làm việc bán thời gian tại một trung tâm y tế trong thành phố và sống một cuộc sống bận rộn với các lớp học và giao lưu với bạn bè.

About the storyteller
Catherine is a young Vietnamese Australian woman who was born and grew up in Perth, Western Australia. After an incident that cause her to be paralysed as a child, Catherine was left with a permanent disability of her left arm and left leg. Her disability makes it difficult for her to go to work, do outdoor activities and some daily tasks. However, with the help of her family and support worker, she has been working part time at a medical centre in the city and lives a busy lifestyle with classes and socialising with friends.

Cô cũng tham gia nhiều sinh hoạt khác nhau tại DDA chẳng hạn nhóm Cà phê Tâm tình nơi những người khuyết tật chia sẻ vui buồn và các ý tưởng sống vui sống khoẻ. Thi tin rằng chìa khóa để sống vui khoẻ là phát triển một mạng lưới hỗ trợ mạnh mẽ. Cô chia sẻ lời khuyên về việc làm thế nào để tìm được sự hỗ trợ từ bạn bè đồng cảnh ngộ.

Thi là phụ nữ trung niên vượt biên đến Úc từ 30 năm trước. Cô sử dụng xe lăn và nạng để giúp mình di chuyển. Thi luôn tích cực tham gia những vòng tròn kết nối hỗ trợ để tìm được bạn bè và có thêm nhiều kiến thức cho cuộc sống khuyết tật độc lập và vui vẻ. Cô chia sẻ kinh nghiệm tìm đến nhóm sinh hoạt nơi có những người hiểu và tôn trọng cô, cũng như một vòng tròn kết nối với xã hội có thể giúp người khuyết tật được lắng nghe.
(Thi is a moderator of the Disability Support Circle group for people from the Vietnamese Australian community at Diversity and Disability Alliance (DDA). She also participates in various activities at DDA such as the Peer2Peer Coffee group where people with disabilities share their joys and sorrows and ideas about living a happy and healthy life. Thi believes that the key to living well is developing a strong support network. She shares her advice on how to find peer support.
About the storyteller
Thi is a middle-aged woman who crossed the border to Australia 30 years ago. She uses a wheelchair and crutches to help with her mobility. Thi actively participates in support circles to find friends and gain more knowledge for an independent and happy life. She shares her experience of finding a group where there are people who understand and respect her, as well as a social circle that can help people with disabilities feel heard.
