(My guest speaker provides information about how people with disabilities can use resources, networks, and skills available in the community in order to participate in life to the upmost. Sometimes, there is an assumption that people with disabilities are unable to learn new skills or ‘build capacity’. But, as our guest speaker Rifat explains, these limitations only exist in the mind of those who make up our society, and that perspectives that place limitations on people with disabilities can be shifted to make society more inclusive. Rifat highlights how people with disabilities can achieve many goals. He shares his knowledge of mainstream organisations that offer activities and programs that can help listeners build capacity and identify skills, networks and resources to help them live well. He talks about how we should focus on abilities instead of disability, and how people can accomplish many things with a little encouragement.
About the guest speaker
Rifat is a Turkish Australian who was born in 1968. His family migrated to Australia in 1969, when he was just 5 months old. As a son of migrants, his family spent his early years working in any job they could find and at the same time learning English. After trying different careers, he joined the Brotherhood of St Laurence as a local area coordinator assisting people with disability to make the best of their lives. He worked hard to link participants with mainstream and community services to bring inclusion and a sense of belonging to their communities. This was the start to a more fulfilled life. The community services that he worked with were the local councils who linked participants and their carers to inclusive activities and events. He is currently a business development manager with Complete Nursing and Home Care where he focuses on providing support workers for in home care and community access as well as registered nurses. They service the north and west of Melbourne and have an office in Bendigo, supporting people with a disability that live in the region.

About the guest speaker
(
Rocca Salcedo uses a wheelchair because twenty years ago, when she first arrived in Australia from Colombia, she was crossing a street in the city of Melbourne and a driver ran through a red light and hit her. Since then, Rocca has been facing challenges due to the accessibility barriers she encounters every time she has to travel from one place to another by public transport or by plane.
Despite the challenges, she does not give up, but continues looking for solutions that improve her quality of life and that, at the same time, help to make society more accessible for everyone.
As well as practicing as a solicitor, Rocca runs a dance company for people in wheelchairs that she founded and for which she was awarded the Victorian Government Disability Leadership Award. With her fighting spirit, Rocca has led several protests in Melbourne demanding better access to public transport for people with disabilities, especially trams. "The government had promised to start making changes to the trams, that means having some new trams that are flat and making changes to the tram stops," Rocca says.
The challenges of accessibility to the public transportation system in her own neighbourhood caused her to look for alternatives that led her to adapt a car that she now drives with the exclusive use of her arms and hands, since all the controls are on the steering wheel.
"I try to stay calm and focus on the solution and I don't let the little pebbles on the road damage the path of my destiny because things are going to happen, whether we are in a wheelchair or not."
