About the guest speaker
(
Oswaldo Grillet leads a full life, both within his mental and physical wellbeing, due to his disciplined practice of meditation and yoga that helped him put a positive spin on his life after developing a visual disability. Listen to Oswaldo's story and his journey along “a scientific and mystical path” which has brought him peace and happiness.
“Without a doubt, in life there is always a before and after… one must learn to let go when it is necessary to let go… and yes, I had to stop doing things that I used to do, or I had to do them differently and make adjustments, but whenever a space opens up, or something leaves, it is an opportunity to understand that something new and different is coming,” says Oswaldo, who currently works as a motivational therapist, social worker, yoga teacher, musician, composer and writer.
Oswaldo admits that, for years, he was disconnected from his body and mind, involved in maintaining a hectic existence, overflowing with projects and responsibilities that demanded his attention and time. But with the partial loss of his vision, he began to look for paths that led him towards introspection. In that space, he reassessed his priorities and learned to accept that "life is a process of learning and adaptation."
It is worth noting that Oswaldo is an experienced practitioner of yoga and meditation. He began exploring both techniques in Venezuela when he was a teenager, and years later he traveled to India where he lived as a monk, studying and practicing yoga, devotional music, transcendental meditation, and Ayurvedic medicine.
This wealth of knowledge made his path easier, and helped him become more aware of his reality in order to find ways to adapt to the inevitable changes to his vision and life. Thus, little by little, and with the help of yoga and meditation, he managed to fine-tune his stress management, which was important "because retinal detachment is linked to the nervous system and pressure," explains Oswaldo, aware that the risk of returning to suffer another detachment in one of his eyes is significantly high.
Oswaldo insists that meditation does not require extreme effort, explaining that instead you just have to find a quiet place, close your eyes, concentrate on your breathing and accept the thoughts that arise, observing them, instead of trying to control them. The essence of yoga is to cultivate the mind so that a person can love and be at peace with himself and with his internal processes, encouraging him to live in harmony with everything that he cannot control in his environment. Yoga can also be defined as a tool to achieve “balance not only within the body or between mind and body, but also balance in the human relationship with the world”.
