(On a daily basis, Filiz juggles being a migrant, a mother and a woman with a disability. Based on her experiences, she established a platform called Women of World Stage (WOWS), which relies on the power of women and the collective work of communities to connect, support, empower and inspire women and their families from all over the world, bring communities together and promote creativity and productivity. The platform is truly inclusive of women from different backgrounds and women who have disabilities, like Filiz. Filiz hopes WOWS will become a worldwide organisation that all women can benefit from. In this interview, we discuss her adventure in building this platform and what they're doing right now.
About the storyteller
Filiz Shah is a Turkish Australian woman, who came to Australia without a support network or language skills. Through her determination and strong will, Filiz learnt English at TAFE, gained employment at UWA and Relationships Australia, and studied a Bachelor of Commerce, Double Majoring Accounting and Taxation at Curtin University. While in Australia, Filiz also got married and became a mother, but experienced a medical issue when her child was 20 days old that led to multiple health issues and lifelong disability.
Filiz was determined to continue living well after she acquired her disability. Since then, her experiences as a woman with a disability, a migrant and a mother inspired her to form Women of World Stage WOWS Inc. (WOWS), a platform where much sharing and learning is done.

(Pradeep believes that pursuing a hobby is one of the things that brings joy to a person's life. In this episode, he shares how he learnt to sail after he began using a wheelchair. Now, he sails in the deep sea alone. If you're interested in sailing, Pradeep offers advice about the accessible facilities and training available for people with disabilities.

Pradeep Hewavitharana is an advocate for people with disabilities and holds many positions in several disability focused organisations. Aside from his work, he loves to get outdoors and spend time sailing, playing para-golf and wheelchair badminton.

Florrie Kung is the Service Support Officer at Vision Australia Seeing Eye Dogs. She comes from Hong Kong. She started as an administration volunteer in Seeing Eye Dogs. After 3 years of voluntary services, she joined the team in a full-time capacity to provide administrative support. At times, she helps to care for the dogs that are in training by providing a home during the dogs’ formal training period.

(Pradeep Hewavitharana is an advocate for people with disabilities and uses a wheelchair himself. In this story, he explains how he contested his local council elections to promote the issue of inclusion and access in his area, and shares how others can do the same. Pradeep hopes to expand recreational, wheelchair-accessible entertainment facilities for the disabled and non-disabled communities, as well as programs that provide access to information and employment opportunities.

Pradeep Hewavitharana is very politically and socially active in Melbourne, promoting the rights of people with disabilities and encouraging others to do the same. Alongside his volunteering work, Pradeep enjoys playing para-golf and wheelchair badminton.

(Australian Multicultural Community Services (AMCS) conduct a program to develop social connectivity for people who are experiencing new challenges or have nobody to talk with. The social café is a safe place to share experiences, and concerns. This program provides gentle exercise, line dancing, arts and crafts, gardening, knitting and games for the participants. This program empowers people living happily and healthy with different activities.
