About the guest speaker
Gabriela Male es originalmente del Perú y ha trabajado en Legal Aid WA (LAWA) desde hace 21 años. LAWA es una entidad que recibe fondos del gobierno federal y estatal para otorgar ayuda legal a la comunidad de Australia Occidental.
Gabriela empezó a trabajar como consejera bilingüe para las personas hispano-hablantes con problemas legales. Los ayudaba a llenar formularios para la corte y cartas de negociación con terceros. También trabajo como asistente legal visitando las prisiones, su labor consistía en obtener información personal e instrucciones de los prisioneros para darles a los abogados en LAWA y llenar sus aplicaciones para obtener representación legal con LAWA. Fue asistente personal de la Consejera Legal Principal de LAWA quien preparaba apelaciones a las cortes superiores representando a los clientes que habían sido ya sentenciados.
Como Asesora tuvo la oportunidad de evaluar las aplicaciones de todo tipo de asistencia legal requerida por los clientes tanto en el área criminal como familiar. Actualmente trabaja en el área de administración en una sección nueva que brinda apoyo a los abogados privados que son contratados por LAWA para representar a los clientes.

About the guest speaker
Gabriela Male is originally from Peru and she has worked at Legal Aid WA (LAWA) for 21 years. LAWA is an entity that receives funds from the federal and state government to provide legal aid to the Western Australian community.
Gabriela began working as a bilingual counselor for Spanish-speaking people with legal problems. She helped them fill out court forms and negotiating letters with third parties. She also worked as a paralegal visiting prisons, her job was to obtain personal information and instructions from prisoners to give to LAWA attorneys and fill out their applications for legal representation with LAWA. She was a personal assistant to LAWA's Chief Legal Counsel who prepared appeals to superior courts representing clients who had already been sentenced.
As an Advisor she had the opportunity to evaluate the applications of all types of legal assistance required by clients in both the criminal and family areas. She currently works in the administration area in a new section that provides support to private attorneys who are hired by LAWA to represent clients.
