About the storyteller
(In this episode, Korial talks about his woodwork occupation in his home garage while trying to restore wood furniture and to recycle wooden pallets and panels found on the roadsides in his city. At the earliest stage of his settlement in Australia, Korial was surprised when he noticed these objects left in front of houses waiting to be collected, crushed and dumped as landfill waste by the garbage trucks. He decided then to give a new life to the unwanted objects. With the help of his wife and the support of the family friends, Korial repairs, restores and polishes wooden objects, then gives them to those who need them. His hobby gives him in return a feeling of satisfaction and happiness.
About the storyteller
Korial has gradually lost his sight in his early youth, long before he came to Australia as a refugee with his wife Widad in 2018. Despite their recent settlement in Australia, the couple have been enjoying good friendships with members of their local community thanks to Korial’s wide range of talents and skills, in particular his interest in woodwork and recycling. Korial speaks several languages in use in Iraq, these are Chaldean, Syriac, Aramaic and Arabic. He is currently learning English in the hope to work as a translator in the coming years.
